So you would like to install Windows 7?
Photos can be seen on my flickr of windows 7 http://www.flickr.com/photos/kosh79
I will be doing the following install on a Asus N0J Net book http://www.pcauthority.com.au/Review/138021,asus-n10j-high-on-our-list-of-favourite-netbooks.aspx
Tools you will need
• Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
• Your computers driver disk (Lan,Wireless/Blue tooth,Audio,Sound,video)
• A Laptop or Desktop with an operating system
• Windows 7 DVDrom disk
• Win2flash (if Net book install)
First of all
Download and install “Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor” this tool tests your hardware for windows 7 compatibility. Install under your current set up usb plug in printer, web cam, digital cam, and other devices that you wish to test for win7 compatibility.

Install “Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor” on to your current system that you wish to test. If you get the all clear then it’s ready to install
Ok make sure you back up your files before doing this! Even if you decide to dual boot remember anything can go wrong!
So if you have a DVDrom then put disk in and reboot then hit your hotkey to boot off disk.
If you have a Net book and no optical drive then you will have to do an SD card or usb install. So put the windows 7 os disk into a computer that has a DVDrom drive, then plug in your SD card in a media card hub or usb thumbstick into the computer, then unzip latest version of win2flash http://wintoflash.com/download/en/ then just click on the win2flash icon in the folder.
Now just click on the wizard icon, now even if you are using SD card it works with well with the Usb install.
Windows file path is your drive for your DVDrom that your windows 7 DVD is currently in. Make sure usb is correct for your SD or USB for the Drive letter default is e: check in you’re My Computer icon section.
Booting from win7 USB/SD
After that is done just put your usb or sd card into your netbook and reboot then you will need your bios hotkey or the hotkey for your boot menu as you need to select boot from USB. (usb/sd both use USB booting) For my Asus N0J hotkey was ESC either google it or check your manual for your computer.
Some of the other computers hotkeys could be “Delete”, “F1″, “F2″, “Insert”, and “F10″ source http://www.weethet.nl/english/hardware_bootfromusbstick.php
This all depends upon which bios your computer has too. Also helps to google the bios name that appears upon startup. CPU-Z will tell you too http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and it is free ![]()
Other options are to install it under VMware.
I Advise you don’t just have 1 machine with Windows 7 on it make sure you have other machines with win xp on it, as not all software works under windows 7.
Windows will install the video driver for you, you may need your Lan, audio driver thou. Lan driver esp if you want to access the internet lol. And your Wireless driver (basically get all your drivers for you computer first and put on to a spare hard drive or usb.)
Tested software on my machine for Win7 (Asus N0J netbook)
• Adobe Illustrator CS3
• Adobe Fireworks CS3
• Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
• Pidgin (messenger)
• Foxit (Pdf reader- smaller than Acrobat Reader)
• Firefox (Mozilla)
• Notepad++
• PC tools Anti-virus (free)
• PC tools Firewall plus
• Threat fire (Anti-virus & Spyware checker)
• VLC player (yes works fine on Win7)
I have been told that 3Dstudio max works under Windows 7.
I don’t think I will bother installing Adobe Flash CS3 as it is on a net book too small to see detail but does have nice HD video card Geforce 9300m 256mb
I will install the following later and I will update this blog post.
• Microsoft office 2007
• Spybot
• ITunes
• Tveristy http://tversity.com/
• Nokia software
What doesn’t work!
Nexuiz (free game) http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/
Google more intense for it write down a list of programs you currently use a lot or intend to use under Windows 7.
Baseline for your install
• Anti virus
• Firewall
• Design programs
• Programming editors
• Benchmark programs
• Video Games
• Office
• Schedules
• Media (video/audio)
• 2D/3D programs

Final notes
Later on I will be dual booting again with Fedora core 12 (Linux) with windows 7. Originally I had just Fedora Core 11 on its own; I had to install Windows 7 over the top of it so I can dual boot with Fedora again.
Screenshot’s of Windows 7 on my net book can be seen on this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/kosh79
